Atlanta Braves in Search of Brian Snitker’s Successor

The Braves’ general manager, Alex Anthopoulos, has expressed his desire to act swiftly in the search for Brian Snitker’s replacement as manager. However, he has confirmed that interviews have not yet been conducted. Snitker, 69, announced on Wednesday that he will not continue as manager after ten seasons at the helm of the team. Although Snitker’s decision was not unexpected, Anthopoulos assured that he did not begin compiling a list of candidates until the manager finalized his plans.

He would have returned. That’s why we were going to wait and give him the time he needed.

David Ross, former Braves catcher and former Chicago Cubs manager, expressed his interest in returning to managing and would consider an opportunity with the Braves as something “incredible”. Anthopoulos emphasized that “we currently do not have a list” and that he wanted to resolve internal matters before starting the search.

Now I will direct my attention to the manager… We haven’t spoken to anyone.

Snitker led the Braves to victory in the 2021 World Series, the highlight of nearly half a century with the organization. He will continue in an advisory role and will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame next season. Anthopoulos and Snitker have an agreement for a five-year period as senior advisor, although this could change. Two coaches from Snitker’s coaching staff have experience as managers: Walt Weiss, bench coach and former manager of the Colorado Rockies, and Fredi González, third base coach and former manager of the Braves and the Miami Marlins. Speculation has swirled around other potential candidates, such as Mark DeRosa, former Braves infielder, and Ryan Flaherty, Cubs bench coach. The appointment of Skip Schumaker as manager of the Texas Rangers on Friday night could influence the search.

Before they named Skip Schumaker, there were eight vacancies. That’s a lot of vacancies… That makes it incredibly challenging.

Anthopoulos indicated that the deadline for hiring could be affected if he focuses on a candidate who is also of interest to another team.

Of course, as soon as possible with as many openings. You can’t rush or force it… You’d love to be able to do it as soon as possible.

Snitker compiled an 811-688 record as manager and ranks third in franchise history in wins, behind Bobby Cox (2,149) and Frank Selee (1,004). He led the Braves to seven postseasons, including six National League East titles.
