Braves Manager Search: Anthopoulos Acts with Caution

The Atlanta Braves’ general manager, Alex Anthopoulos, has expressed his intention to move quickly in the search for Brian Snitker’s successor as manager. However, he has confirmed that no interviews have been conducted yet. Snitker, 69, announced on Wednesday that he will not continue as manager after 10 seasons at the helm of the team. Although Snitker’s decision was not unexpected, Anthopoulos waited for the manager to finalize his plans before starting to compile a list of potential candidates.

He would have returned. That’s why we were going to wait and give him the time he needed.

David Ross, former Braves catcher and former Chicago Cubs manager, expressed his desire to manage again and would consider an opportunity with the Braves “amazing”. Anthopoulos stated that they do not yet have a list of candidates and preferred to resolve internal matters before starting the search.

Now I will direct my attention to the manager… We haven’t spoken to anyone.

Snitker led the Braves to victory in the 2021 World Series, the highlight of nearly half a century with the organization. He will remain in an advisory role and will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame next season. Anthopoulos and Snitker have an agreement for a five-year period as senior advisor, although this could change. Two coaches on Snitker’s team have managerial experience: Walt Weiss, former manager of the Colorado Rockies, and Fredi González, former manager of the Braves and the Miami Marlins. Speculation has also arisen about other potential candidates, such as Mark DeRosa, former Braves infielder, and Ryan Flaherty, Cubs bench coach. Skip Schumaker was named manager of the Texas Rangers on Friday night.

Before they named Skip Schumaker, there were eight vacancies… That’s a lot of vacancies… That makes it incredibly challenging.

Anthopoulos indicated that the deadline for hiring could be affected if he focuses on a candidate who is also of interest to another team.

Of course, as soon as possible with so many vacancies… You can’t just rush or force it… You’d love to be able to do it sooner rather than later.

Snitker leaves a record of 811-688 as a manager and ranks third in franchise history in wins, behind Bobby Cox (2,149) and Frank Selee (1,004). He led the Braves to seven postseasons, including six National League East Division titles.
