Braves Secure Raisel Iglesias and Acquire Mauricio Dubon

The Atlanta Braves have made significant moves this offseason, focusing on strengthening their team. They have re-signed closer Raisel Iglesias to a one-year, $16 million contract, and acquired two-time Gold Glove winner Mauricio Dubon in a trade with the Houston Astros. The announcement was made on Wednesday, marking a significant step in the Braves’ strategy for next season. Iglesias, the experienced 35-year-old right-handed pitcher, had completed a four-year, $58 million contract. His performance has been key for the team, and his continuity is a plus for the stability of the bullpen. In the exchange with the Astros, the Braves received Dubon, a versatile player who can play in several positions. In return, the Astros received Nick Allen. Dubon, 31, played in 133 games with Houston last season, batting .241 and earning his second Gold Glove as a utility infielder. His experience and ability to play multiple positions make him a valuable asset for the Braves. The Braves’ general manager, Alex Anthopoulos, highlighted Dubon’s versatility and his potential to contribute to the team. Anthopoulos also mentioned that the team could look for a shortstop in the future.

I told him that I still don’t know what your role will be, but the fact that we have the flexibility to use it everywhere… is a good piece.

Iglesias, despite a season with ups and downs, demonstrated his ability to close games, recording an outstanding second half and successfully finishing his last 18 save opportunities. He finished with 29 saves in 34 opportunities.

We knew we needed to address the closer situation one way or another and what better than someone we know. He wanted to be here. His first choice was to return to Atlanta. I’m glad we were able to make it happen.

An important change in Iglesias’s performance was the reduction in the use of his slider and changeup, which affected his effectiveness. Since 2017, Iglesias has established himself as one of the most prominent relievers in the league. Iglesias spent his first six seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, before joining the Los Angeles Angels in 2021. The Angels traded him to the Braves at the 2022 trade deadline.
