Sean Murphy to Undergo Surgery and Miss the Rest of the Season

Atlanta Braves catcher Sean Murphy will undergo right hip surgery that will end his season, though he is expected to be ready for spring training. The decision to perform the surgery was made after an MRI on Monday, which revealed a tear in the hip labrum. Murphy is expected to be out of action for approximately four months after Thursday’s intervention, performed by Dr. Thomas Byrd.

It’s been bothering him for the last three years. He said he would just gut it out and play through it and go and come. But talking to Dr. Burke today, he was surprised that he’d been playing the last three years with a significant tear.

Murphy, who was an All-Star in 2023, has a batting average of .199 with 16 home runs and an OPS of .709 in just 94 games this season. Rookie Drake Baldwin has had a solid season behind the plate for Atlanta, batting .276, with 15 home runs and 64 RBIs in 107 games.

He never made excuses, but there were days when he would say, ‘I don’t know if I’ll be able to go, but I’m going to fight.’ But it got to the point where he just couldn’t do it anymore. Even Dr. Byrd acknowledged that this was only going to get worse. He’s been trying to manage this for the last three years. He should be a much better player once this is resolved.
