Shane Bieber Suffers Setback in Recovery
The Cleveland Guardians’ right-handed pitcher, Shane Bieber, has been pulled from his expected rehab start this Friday due to elbow discomfort that was operated on.Bieber, who was awarded the American League Cy Young Award, was only able to participate in two games during the 2024 season before undergoing Tommy John surgery in April. It was anticipated that he would be out of action for at least half of the 2025 season.
The discomfort arose after a bullpen session on Tuesday with the Double-A Akron team. Bieber is scheduled for a consultation with the doctor who performed his surgery to determine the next steps to take.
On May 31, his 30th birthday, Bieber made a rehab start for the Arizona League Guardians, where he allowed one hit and struck out five batters in 2 1/3 innings without allowing any runs.
Since his debut with Cleveland in 2018, the two-time All-Star has accumulated a 62-32 record and a 3.22 ERA in 136 games (134 starts). Bieber won the Cy Young Award in 2020.
In December, Bieber agreed to a one-year contract with the Guardians for $10 million, which includes a player option for 2026 for $16 million with a $4 million buyout.
