Brett Baty to the Injured List: Mets Lose Key Player

Miami – The New York Mets have placed Brett Baty on the injured list due to a right oblique strain. This decision, made on Saturday before the crucial game against the Miami Marlins, ends the infielder’s regular season and could potentially keep him out of the postseason, should the team qualify. Baty suffered the injury while taking a swing during the first inning in Friday night’s loss. Although he played in the bottom of the inning, he was later substituted. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza reported that Baty will undergo an MRI at the end of the weekend. The results will determine the severity of the injury and whether his return in October is possible. Baty, 25, solidified himself as a starting player on the team during the summer. Splitting his time between third and second base, he batted .254 with 18 home runs and a .748 OPS in 130 games, after a slow start.

We’re talking about a player who practically established himself in the daily lineup, whether at third base or second base. And then what he was able to contribute offensively and defensively. It’s a tough blow. But we have other players who will have opportunities and will have to step up.

The Mets called up first baseman/outfielder Jared Young to replace Baty on the active roster. Ronny Mauricio started at third base against Miami. Mauricio, a former top prospect, saw his playing time reduced as the Mets unexpectedly found themselves in the fight for a playoff spot. Mauricio’s start this Saturday will be his first since August 24th.
