Marcus Semien Expects to Return to the Rangers in the Playoff Push

Texas Rangers infielder Marcus Semien is holding out hope to play again this season, despite suffering a fracture and sprain in his left foot just three weeks ago. Semien, who is no longer using a protective boot, has been working on a treadmill in a pool. According to his statements, he has managed to move without limping while performing exercises to strengthen his legs, after a period of inactivity.

Getting ready to get back in action. Talking to the doctors, in an ideal world, I think it’s six weeks needed. But right now, given our situation, I’m trying to push a little.

The Texas team is in a crucial position, 2.5 games behind Houston, leader of the American League West Division, and 1.5 games behind the last wild card spot. The Rangers’ schedule includes a series against the New York Mets and another against the Astros. Semien’s return could occur in the final weeks of the regular season, just four weeks after his injury, when the team has nine games left to play.

At four weeks, there’s still some risk. But, I’m willing to see what I can do and if there’s a real chance to get back on the field. Regardless, I’ll work as hard as I can to return as soon as possible. The team is playing very well, it’s fun to watch. There’s a lot of energy and I want to be a part of that.

Semien suffered the injury on August 20 in Kansas City and was placed on the 10-day injured list two days later. This is only the second time in his 13 seasons in the Major Leagues that he has been placed on the injured list. Before the injury, Semien had only missed six of the Rangers’ 615 games since joining the team before the 2022 season on a seven-year, $175 million contract. In 127 games this season, he has batted .230 with 15 home runs, 62 RBIs and 62 runs scored.
