Christian Walker Leaves Game After Being Hit by Pitch

The Houston Astros’ starting pitcher, Christian Walker, had to leave Wednesday’s game against the Athletics after being hit by a pitch on his right hand.

Manager Joe Espada reported that the hit occurred on the upper part of the hand, near the knuckles. The X-rays taken were negative.

“That’s a good sign. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow,” Espada stated.

Walker was hit by a 96 mph fastball thrown by Luis Severino in the fourth inning. He writhed in pain for a few seconds before heading to first base, where he was evaluated by a trainer.

Despite the hit, Walker remained in the game and scored after a two-out single by Cam Smith.

After playing defensively in the next two innings, he was replaced by pinch hitter Mauricio Dubón in the bottom of the sixth inning. “He played defensively, and when he came back for his at-bat, we asked him to grab a bat, and he wasn’t feeling very comfortable doing it,” Espada explained.
