Ryan Weiss reaches an agreement with the Houston Astros
The pitcher from the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), Ryan Weiss, has reached an agreement with the Houston Astros for a one-year contract guaranteeing him $2.6 million, according to sources close to the negotiation.
The agreement, subject to a physical examination, includes an option for 2027, which could raise his earnings to more than 10 million dollars in two years.
Weiss, 28, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2018. Subsequently, he pitched in the Independent League in 2023 and 2024 before signing with the Hanwha Eagles of the KBO. The right-hander had a 16-5 record with a 2.87 ERA in 30 starts last season, which sparked interest from at least half a dozen MLB teams this winter, according to sources close to his situation.
Weiss will be given the opportunity to be part of the Astros’ rotation, which is in a state of change due to the free agency of their ace, Framber Valdez, who may not return.
Weiss uses a combination of straight, curve, and change, which he perfected in Korea in recent years. He also added a change of speed at the end of the year, which the MLB teams liked.
The Eagles wanted him back for next season, but the Astros’ interest was enough for Weiss to give up his return to the KBO.
Weiss will make his MLB debut when he takes the mound next year.
