Javier Assad Seeks to Strengthen the Chicago Cubs in the Final Stretch

CHICAGO – Pitcher Javier Assad feels optimistic about his ability to contribute to the success of the Chicago Cubs in the crucial phase of the season. Manager Craig Counsell shares this view. Assad is scheduled to begin a rehab game with the Triple-A Iowa team on Wednesday. The right-handed pitcher is recovering from a left oblique injury that has been problematic.

“Just trying to get back to 100 percent,” Assad stated on Saturday through a translator.

Assad, who turns 28 on Wednesday, suffered the injury during spring training. The injury worsened during a rehabilitation appearance with Iowa in April. Recently, he threw three innings without allowing any runs in a rehab appearance in the Arizona Complex League on Thursday.

“It’s been a tough season for Javy in terms of, you know, he was really hurt for most of spring training and the entirety of the season,” Counsell commented. “But I think the important thing is to remember that we have important baseball left and he can be a contributor.”

Assad’s return could be a significant boost to the Cubs’ rotation, which has suffered major losses. Jameson Taillon is also in the process of recovering from a right calf injury. Justin Steele, for his part, underwent elbow surgery that will keep him out for the rest of the season. The Cubs recorded a 60-43 record before Saturday night’s game against the White Sox at Rate Field, placing them one game behind the Milwaukee, leaders of the National League Central Division. In the 2024 season, Assad was a key member of the rotation, with a 7-6 record and a 3.73 ERA in 29 starts (the most in his career) and 147 innings pitched. In his three seasons with the team, Assad has a 14-11 record with a 3.40 ERA in 70 games, including 23 relief appearances. If he stays healthy, he could be used from the bullpen at some point.

“I think we’ll set him up as an opener, but I think, yes, I think, you know, by mid-August… you certainly have to consider everything when you get to mid-August,” Counsell said.

Assad expressed that it was “really sad” when the injury worsened in April, but now he is focused on his recovery and being ready to help the team. “Once I return, I will help in any capacity the team needs,” Assad added.
