Astros Stars Drop Out of the World Baseball Classic

Houston Astros stars José Altuve and Carlos Correa will not participate in the World Baseball Classic due to insurance issues with their contracts. Correa, in statements to The Athletic, explained that he will not be able to represent Puerto Rico due to the risk that his $31 million salary would entail in case of injury during the tournament, which will be held from March 5 to 17.

That’s too big a risk to take, playing without insurance.

Altuve, who underwent a procedure on his right foot during the offseason, will also not play for Venezuela due to insurance reasons, according to The Athletic. The player missed more than eight weeks of the 2023 season after suffering a fractured thumb in the World Baseball Classic.

I signed the document indicating that I am willing to go and play as I did in the last two World Classics. It is always an honor to represent my country. I played in the last one and the previous one and I intend to do so in this one. I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, but it seems that this year it doesn’t depend on me.

Correa, who returned to the Astros at last season’s trade deadline, stated that he spoke with owner Jim Crane and was told to “focus on the team and spring training” and that the team “had too many injuries [in 2025]”. The World Baseball Classic will be held in Houston, Miami, Tokyo, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the semifinals and final in Miami.
