Andrew Abbott to Open the Season for the Reds
Left-handed pitcher Andrew Abbott will be in charge of going up to the mound for the Cincinnati Reds in the opening game of the season, which will be played at home against the Boston Red Sox on March 26. This will be the first time Abbott, 26, will start on Opening Day. The player was selected as an All-Star for the first time last year, in his third season with the Reds. Abbott had a 10-7 record with a 2.87 ERA in 166.1 innings over 29 starts last year. He began the season on the injured list while recovering from a left shoulder injury that cut short his 2024 season. He established himself as a front-line starter for the Reds.Star opener Hunter Greene, who was the Reds’ Opening Day starter last year, is experiencing right elbow stiffness and is not currently throwing. Abbott was selected in the second round of the Reds’ draft in 2021, coming from the University of Virginia, and made his major league debut two years later. In 75 games, all as a starter, with Cincinnati, he has a 28-23 record with a 3.42 ERA and 383 strikeouts, 139 walks and a 1.243 WHIP.It’s incredible. I don’t take anything for granted. I feel honored to represent Cincinnati that day. I know how big this celebration is, it’s great. Having the opportunity with all my teammates, all the talent we have on this team means a lot to me too.
