Cameron Young positions himself as the leader in the Wyndham Championship, seeking his first victory on the PGA Tour.
Cameron Young’s Domain
Cameron Young showcased his skill on the course by accumulating four consecutive birdies in the first part of the round, extending his lead to eight strokes. Although he then focused on staying calm with a series of pars, he achieved an impressive 65 (-5), which gave him a five-stroke lead before the final day. Young, who had already completed a previous round without bogeys, continued his good performance with key birdies, including an impressive 30-foot putt on the 4th hole and a two-putt birdie from 20 feet on the par 5 of the 5th hole.Nico Echavarria, from Colombia, cut the distance to four strokes after achieving three birdies in four holes. A final birdie allowed him to sign a card of 64. Young, who broke a streak of 39 holes without bogeys by missing a 6-foot putt on the 14th hole, responded with an excellent approach for birdie on the par 5 of the 15th hole and a 10-foot birdie on the 17th, giving him a five-stroke lead.I just played really good golf for about an hour. I had some opportunities on the back nine, but I didn’t make as many putts. Although I kept a steady pace with some average shots in the middle of the round, it was nice to finish the way I did.
Cameron Young
Young, known for being one of the best players without wins on the main circuit, has been runner-up seven times since his rookie season in 2021, including a World Golf Championship and the 2022 British Open. Currently at 20-under par, Young needs a 67 on Sunday to set a new tournament record. His main goal is to get a title on the PGA Tour, especially with an eye on being part of the Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black. In 2023, Young ranked number 9 in the Ryder Cup standings and was not selected for the team. A victory would propel him to the 15th position and put him in the conversation for the team, considering his track record at Bethpage. In 2017, he became the first amateur to win the New York State Open, setting a course record with a 64 at Bethpage Black.I’ll only worry about what I’m doing. As I said, I’ll try to hit the best shots possible and try to make the putts and we’ll see after 18.
Nico Echavarria
Echavarria was the only player within eight strokes of Young. Aaron Rai (69), Chris Kirk (67), and Mac Meissner (70) tied for third place. Kirk is currently 73rd in the FedEx Cup standings. The Wyndham Championship is the last event of the regular season and determines the top 70 players who will advance to the lucrative PGA Tour playoffs, which will begin next week in Memphis, Tennessee. Davis Thompson (No. 78) tied for seventh place. Gary Woodland, who is returning after brain surgery, is ranked 75th in the standings. He shot a round of 70 strokes and tied for ninth place, which puts him on the cut line to advance to the FedEx Cup playoffs. One of the most notable ascents occurred on Saturday morning. Matti Schmid, who is in 70th place in the FedEx Cup and was two strokes above the cut, played his last six holes in 5 under par for a 65 and then made a round of 68 in the afternoon, tying for 13th place. Also with chances to advance are the Danish twins Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard, located in positions 71 and 82 respectively. Both finished 36 holes with a total of 3 under par 137 and hoped not to miss the cut. However, the cut dropped from 4 under par to 3 under par. Rasmus Hojgaard shot a round of 41 strokes on the back nine after starting on the 10th hole in the third round, and then shot a round of 29. Nicolai Hojgaard shot a round of 38 and then a 31 on the front nine. Both need a good round on Sunday, but they are not completely out of the competition yet. That has been my goal throughout this year. I am trying to focus on that and take all the small things that happen day by day as they come. In the back of my mind, I try to imagine myself on that team.
