In an exciting finish at the Players Championship, Cameron Young demonstrated his composure by overcoming Matt Fitzpatrick and securing his first renowned victory on the PGA Tour.

An Impeccable Performance

After seven second-place finishes on the circuit, Young finally tasted victory at the Wyndham Championship in August 2025. In the final round of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, Young showed unwavering determination to avoid another second-place finish. A Fitzpatrick’s shot in the final two holes, Young tied his playing partner with a birdie on the iconic 17th hole. Then, he sealed his triumph with a par on the 18th hole, where a Fitzpatrick drive ended up in the trees, resulting in a bogey.

I feel like we stayed in a really good position throughout the day today, actually, all week. The nerves were present on the 8-inch putt on the last hole. That hole seemed very, very small from a pretty short distance. I’m happy to have finished it and really excited to have played the way I did.

Fitzpatrick, seeking to become the first English golfer to win the Players Championship, narrowly missed an 8-foot par putt on the 18th hole, which would have forced a playoff. Young carded a 4-under-par 68 to finish at 13-under 275, one stroke better than Fitzpatrick and two over Xander Schauffele. Ludvig Aberg, who led by three strokes at the start of the final round, had a poor performance on the back nine and finished tied for fifth. After tying Fitzpatrick, Young connected on a 375-yard drive down the right side of the 18th fairway, leaving just 98 yards to the hole. It was the longest drive by any player on the 18th hole at TPC Sawgrass in the ShotLink era (since 2004). Young’s approach shot stopped on the back edge and he made two putts from 9 1/2 feet to secure the biggest victory of his career and a check for $4.5 million. Young tied Fitzpatrick on the famous 17th hole, taking a more aggressive line from the tee towards the island green. Fitzpatrick hit his shot to the center of the green and needed two putts from 28½ feet for par. Young calmly holed his birdie putt from 9½ feet to tie Fitzpatrick with one hole remaining.

It ended up being a big number. It’s 130 [yards] over that bunker, and I got to watch Matt hit a sand wedge right in front of me. And I felt like if I flew it right where I was looking, I felt like I could fly it to the same number. So, it was just a full swing, not as many nerves as a little touchy one.

Fitzpatrick seemed to be in control with two holes to play. He began the final round tied for fourth place at 8 under par, five strokes behind Aberg. Fitzpatrick started strong, recording birdies on three of the first four holes. He made putts of 12 feet, 3 1/2 feet, and 7 feet on holes 1, 2, and 4, respectively, to move up to 11 under par. Fitzpatrick cooled with pars on seven consecutive holes, before another streak of three birdies in four holes. On the 12th hole, par 4, he hit his second shot to 3 feet. On the 13th hole, par 3, his tee shot stopped 4 feet from the hole. After making a bogey with three putts on the 14th hole, Fitzpatrick made a 12-foot putt for another birdie and return to 13 under par. Åberg began the day with a three-stroke lead and led by two after 10 holes, but then disaster struck on two consecutive holes. On the 11th hole, par 5, Åberg severely cut his approach from 267 yards into the water on the right, leading to a bogey 6. On the 12th hole, par 4, Åberg hooked his tee shot into the water on the left, leading to a double bogey 6. He also bogeyed the 15th hole, par 4, and fell four strokes behind Fitzpatrick. The competition at the Players Championship was fierce and full of unexpected twists, but in the end, Cameron Young proved to be the strongest.
