Wyndham Clark Hopes to Return to Oakmont After Sanction
Golfer Wyndham Clark hopes to play again at Oakmont Country Club, but the decision is in the hands of the historic golf club located outside of Pittsburgh. This after Clark was banned from its facilities for damage to his locker during this year’s US Open.Clark expressed these words to reporters on Sunday, after a final round with 6 under par, achieving a total of 11 under par and tying for fourth place at The Open. “I did something terrible and I am very sorry. I hope you have it in your heart to forgive me and, maybe, in the future I can play there,” he added. In a letter sent to Oakmont Country Club members earlier this week, club president John Lynch communicated that the ban on Clark was made after multiple conversations with the United States Golf Association and the club’s board of directors. Oakmont is scheduled to host the US Open again in 2033, which would be the last year of Clark’s 10-year exemption for winning the 2023 US Open at the Los Angeles Country Club. According to the letter, Clark, 31, could be reinstated at Oakmont if he pays for the damages, makes a “significant contribution” to a charity selected by the club’s board, and undergoes counseling and/or therapy for anger management. That depends on them. I really don’t know. I hope so. It’s a fantastic course and venue, but that depends on them.

Clark seemed surprised that his punishment was detailed in a letter to the Oakmont members. We got in touch and we wanted to do it. Obviously, it makes sense to pay for the damages. That was a given. Then, obviously, all the apologies, and I want to give something back to the community because I damaged a great place in Pittsburgh, so I wanted to do everything I could to show them that what happened there is not a reflection of who I am and it won’t happen again.

This wasn’t the only time Clark was criticized for his behavior on the field this season. At the PGA Championship in May, he threw his driver and damaged a sign near the tee that displayed one of his most important sponsors. Clark has spoken openly about his mental health problems and his temper in the past.We were hoping it would be private. I’ll stay there.

Clark, who has dropped to 28th in the Official World Golf Ranking, recorded his best result in a major since winning the 2023 US Open. It was his second top 10 in 20 tour starts this season.I’ve been pretty open about my change and mental shift to improve, and I did it in ’23 and ’24, and then having a tough year and all the expectations and just the frustration that came together, and I did two stupid things. But one thing it did was wake me up and make me become the person I know I am and the person I want to be.
