Gary Woodland Dominates the Houston Open with Exceptional Performance

Gary Woodland showcased his best form at the Houston Open, achieving an outstanding round of 63 strokes under par. This impressive performance gave him a three-stroke lead at the end of Friday’s play, preparing him to face the weekend at Memorial Park. Woodland, visibly relieved after speaking publicly about his mental health, showed a remarkable ease in his game. His satisfaction was focused more on his ability to overcome a bad shot than on the streak of consecutive birdies that allowed him to extend his lead. With a total of 13 under par (127 strokes), Woodland was three strokes ahead of Nicolai Hojgaard and Jackson Suber, who also had good performances. Brooks Koepka, on the other hand, had a complicated day, with a triple bogey on the 2nd hole and a total of 69 strokes, which prevented him from making the cut for the second time since his return from LIV Golf. Although Woodland wasn’t perfect off the tee, with only five fairways hit, the course design allowed him to recover and maintain a good position. He finished his round with a precise approach on the 16th hole, a 15-foot birdie on the 17th, and another 12-foot birdie on the 18th. A key moment for Woodland was a shot that ended up in the water on the 13th hole, forcing him to take a drop and settle for a bogey. However, he managed to recover.

I was proud of myself because I had a bad shot on the 13th, but I didn’t let it affect me. I told myself to forget about it and move on, and I was able to do it. That was a big change for me.

Woodland has received great support after speaking publicly about his post-traumatic stress disorder, from which he is recovering after brain surgery in September 2023. The victory in Houston could secure his place in the Masters, something that motivates him even more.

There’s no doubt, and I feed off of that. I feel a lot of support. I feel like I’m playing at home. The fans have been incredible. I need that energy to get through the day, that definitely helps. That’s something I hope to take advantage of this weekend.

Hojgaard also has the Masters in mind. He is 47th in the world ranking, and the top 50 after this week secure their invitation to Augusta National. Min Woo Lee and Jason Day, both with rounds of 63 strokes, are four strokes behind Woodland, while Michael Thorbjornsen is one stroke away. Pierceson Coody’s chances of making it to the Masters suffered a setback, as he was forced to withdraw due to a back injury.
