Tom Watson Apologizes for American Fans’ Behavior at the Ryder Cup

Two-time U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson offered apologies to the winning European squad for the behavior of American fans at Bethpage Black. Watson, through his X account, congratulated the European team for their victory and highlighted the sensational game they showed during the first days of the tournament. In addition, he expressed his shame at the disrespectful and malicious attitude of the American fans.

As a player, captain, and as an American, I am ashamed of what happened.

Watson, 76 years old and winner of eight major titles, including five British Opens, participated in four Ryder Cup teams. He was victorious captain of the American team in 1993 in England and captain of the losing team in the 2014 matches in Scotland. The European team, and in particular Rory McIlroy, were subjected to constant taunts and insults, some directed at his wife and family, during the three days of the event in Farmingdale, New York. On several occasions, the booing occurred while McIlroy was preparing to hit the ball, which caused delays and forced the PGA of America to increase security.

I don’t think we should accept that in golf.

Rory McIlroy
McIlroy added that there was a lot of unacceptable language and abusive behavior. A video on social media showed Lowry being held back by his caddie after a fan said something before McIlroy took a shot on Saturday. Another video showed McIlroy walking with his wife, Erica, when a beer appeared to be thrown in their direction, hitting her. American team member Justin Thomas, after witnessing the verbal abuse directed towards McIroy and Shane Lowry on Saturday, commented that they felt empathy for them. It was unfortunate. We wish we had given them something to cheer for instead of people cheering against. I think that was the main consensus of the last two days, that we weren’t giving them enough to cheer for, and they were just trying to help us win. I guess that’s how New York fans are.
