Tom Watson Apologizes for American Fans’ Behavior at the Ryder Cup
Tom Watson, two-time captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, publicly apologized to the winning European team for the behavior of the American fans at Bethpage Black. Watson, through his X account, congratulated the European team on their victory and praised their performance. In addition, he expressed his shame at the disrespectful and malicious attitude of the American fans present at the event. The former player and captain, winner of five Open Championship titles among his eight majors, also expressed his disappointment as an American. During the event, the European team, and Rory McIlroy in particular, were subjected to constant insults and taunts, some directed at his wife and family. These incidents, which occurred while the players were taking their shots, caused delays and forced the PGA of America to reinforce security.I would like to congratulate the European team on their victory. Their play in the early days was sensational. More importantly, I would like to apologize for the rude and cruel behavior of our American fans at Bethpage.

McIlroy added that there was unacceptable language and abusive behavior. A video on social media showed Lowry being restrained by his caddie after a fan said something before McIlroy hit his drive on Saturday. Another video showed McIlroy walking with his wife, Erica, when it appeared a beer was thrown at her, hitting her. Justin Thomas, a member of the American team, also lamented the situation. “We felt bad for them,” said Thomas. “It was unfortunate. Cam [Young] and I just wished we had given them something to cheer about instead of people being against us. I think that was the main consensus of the last two days, that we weren’t giving them enough to cheer for, and they were just trying to help us win. I guess that’s how New York fans are.”I don’t think we should accept that in golf.
