Ryder Cup Stars to Donate Stipends to Charity

In a gesture of generosity, prominent figures from the United States Ryder Cup, including the world number 1, Scottie Scheffler, have announced their intention to donate their financial compensation to charities.

I’m not one to announce what we do. I don’t like to give charitable money to get some kind of recognition. We have something planned for the money we’ll receive. I think it’s something really cool that the PGA of America has given us the opportunity to do.

The PGA of America has decided to compensate the players for the first time in the history of the event. Each of the 12 players and captain Keegan Bradley will receive $300,000 to donate to the charity of their choice, in addition to $200,000 for personal use. Keegan Bradley, who was contacted by the PGA of America last year to collaborate on the implementation of this initiative, has expressed his support for player compensation. On the other hand, European captain Luke Donald has revealed that the European players rejected the idea of receiving compensation, emphasizing their commitment to the purpose and passion of the event.

Each of them said, ‘This is not a week to collect’. We have such a strong purpose on this team and what we play for.

Xander Schauffele, winner of two majors, has also confirmed his intention to donate his stipend to charity, downplaying the discussion around the economic issue.

You guys keep talking about it and trying to make it a negative thing. It is what everyone perceives. There is a lot of pride in playing in one of these events, and yes, we are happy to get paid for this, and yes, I plan to donate it. It’s something that will selfishly make me feel good about what I do.

Patrick Cantlay will also join the donation initiative, allocating his stipend to several charities significant to him. Cantlay clarified that he was not involved in the PGA of America’s decision regarding compensation. Regarding the 2023 event, Cantlay commented on the no-cap controversy, explaining that the cap that year didn’t fit him well, but that this year he has one that does fit. Cantlay emphasized the importance of focusing on the game and putting aside external distractions.
