The US Open this year will maintain its prize money at $21.5 million, matching the figure from the 2024 championship. This tournament continues to be the major championship with the highest prize. The Masters raised its purse to $21 million in April, while the PGA Championship offered $19 million and the most recent Open Championship (July 2024) distributed $17 million.

Bryson DeChambeau earned $4.3 million at the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No. 2. This weekend’s champion at Oakmont Country Club will receive the same amount.

When I started at the USGA just four years ago, our purse was $12.5 [million], so I feel comfortable that we have been leaders in moving fast and big.

The USGA’s CEO, Mike Whan, highlighted the significant increase in golf prize money over the last decade. Whan added that growth has also been seen in women’s golf, going from $5.5 million to $12 million in a similar period.

We know this probably isn’t really about the money for the person who [wins], but at the same time we want the money to be commensurate with the achievement. So we feel comfortable.
