Tiger Woods Honored by the USGA

Golf legend Tiger Woods has left an indelible mark on USGA history, and now his legacy will be officially perpetuated. The USGA announced at its annual meeting in New York that the winner of the U.S. Amateur will receive the Tiger Woods Medal, while the champion of the U.S. Junior Amateur will be awarded the Tiger Woods Trophy. Woods’ influence on golf is undeniable, with impressive victories including the U.S. Open by a record margin of 15 strokes, three consecutive wins at the U.S. Junior Amateur and the U.S. Amateur, and shares the record with Bobby Jones for nine USGA titles.

The USGA and its championships have played a huge role in my life. The U.S. Junior Amateur and the U.S. Amateur were defining moments in my development, both as a golfer and as a person. Being recognized in this way is incredibly moving, and I hope it inspires young players to pursue their dreams and appreciate the history and values of the game.

The USGA had already named its U.S. Amateur trophy in honor of Theodore Havemeyer, its first president. The U.S. Open awards the Jack Nicklaus Medal to the winner, and the U.S. Women’s Open presents the Mickey Wright Medal. Previously, the USGA announced the JoAnne Carner Medal for the champion of the U.S. Women’s Amateur, in honor of the four-time Women’s Amateur winner, JoAnne Gunderson.
