Tiger Woods Undergoes Seventh Back Surgery

The legendary golfer Tiger Woods underwent his seventh back surgery on Friday, a procedure to replace a disc in the lumbar area that was causing him pain and mobility problems. Woods reported through a social media post on Saturday that the surgical intervention was performed in New York. In his message, the athlete emphasized that this decision was the right one for his health and to address the persistent problems in his back. No details were provided regarding the estimated recovery time, which creates uncertainty about his possible participation in the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas or the PNC Championship alongside his son, Charlie, both tournaments scheduled for December. The last time Woods competed was at the PNC Championship last year, where he suffered a playoff defeat. This is the second surgery Woods has undergone this year, following a procedure performed in March due to a rupture of the left Achilles tendon. Furthermore, it is the second back surgery in the last 13 months. Woods explained that he made the decision to undergo surgery after consulting with various doctors and surgeons, due to the pain and limited mobility he was experiencing in his back.

The scanners revealed that he had a collapsed disc at L4/5, disc fragments and a compromised spinal canal,” Woods wrote in his post on Saturday. “I chose to replace my disc yesterday, and I already know I made a good decision for my health and my back.

The first of Woods’ seven back surgeries was performed in April 2014, which ultimately led to a lumbar fusion in 2017. A year later, he won the Tour Championship and in 2019 he conquered his 15th major and his fifth green jacket at the Masters. In February 2021, Woods suffered a car accident that fractured his right leg and ankle, a situation that, according to the player himself, almost cost him amputation. Woods returned to competition a year later, participating in the 2022 Masters. Since the accident, Woods has played only 15 times in the last four years, four of them in the PNC Championship, where he can use a cart during the 36-hole event.
