Tiger Woods Undergoes Seventh Back Surgery

Legendary golfer Tiger Woods underwent a new back surgery on Friday, marking the seventh surgical intervention in his history. On this occasion, the procedure focused on the replacement of a disc in the lumbar area, which had been causing pain and mobility problems. Through a social media post, Woods announced that the surgery took place in New York and that he considered the decision to be the right one for his health and the persistent problems in his back. At the moment, the estimated recovery time has not been specified, nor has his participation in future tournaments been confirmed. Uncertainty surrounds his possible return for the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas or the PNC Championship, where he usually plays with his son Charlie, both events scheduled for December. The last time Woods competed was at last year’s PNC Championship, where he suffered a playoff defeat. This is Woods’ second surgery this year, following a procedure in March due to a rupture of his left Achilles tendon, and the second back surgery in the last 13 months. After experiencing pain and limitations in his mobility, Woods sought the opinion of doctors and surgeons. The evaluations revealed a collapsed disc in the L4/5 area, disc fragments, and an affectation in the spinal canal.

“The explorations determined that he had a collapsed disc in L4/5, disc fragments and a compromised spinal canal,” Woods wrote in Saturday’s post. “I chose to replace my disc yesterday, and I already know I made a good decision for my health and my back.”

The first of Woods’ seven back surgeries took place in April 2014, which ultimately led to a fusion in the lumbar area in 2017. The following year, he achieved victory at the Tour Championship and in 2019 he conquered his 15th major and his fifth green jacket at the Masters. In February 2021, Woods suffered a car accident that caused fractures in his right leg and ankle, a situation that, according to his own words, almost required amputation. Woods returned to competition a year later, participating in the 2022 Masters. Since the accident, Woods has participated in only 15 tournaments in the last four years, including four appearances at the PNC Championship, where he can use a cart during the 36-hole event.
