A new golfing experience is about to arrive from the hand of two of the most recognized names in the sport. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, the masterminds behind the innovative golf league TGL, promise to revolutionize the way fans enjoy this sport. The league, in collaboration with the PGA Tour, will offer an unprecedented experience, allowing fans to witness elite golfer teams compete in a close and personalized environment, within a specially designed stadium. The second season of TGL will begin on December 28, 2025, with matches extending until March 2026. Below, we present all the details of this exciting league.

What is TGL Golf?

Founded in August 2022, TGL is an innovative golf league, with teams of three players competing in two-hour matches. The matches will take place at the SoFi Center, a custom-built venue in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

What does TGL mean?

TGL is the abbreviation for “Tomorrow’s Golf League”. The name comes from TMRW Sports, the company founded by Woods, McIlroy, and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley, focused on creating technological projects in the world of sports and entertainment.

How do TGL matches work?

Each TGL match is divided into two sessions. The first session includes “triples”, a nine-hole format, 3-on-3, with alternate shots. The second session is “singles”, where players compete one-on-one, head-to-head, on six holes, with each golfer playing two holes during the session. The field inside the SoFi Center incorporates various technologies and covers an area of approximately 97 yards by 50 yards, similar to the size of an American football field. Players hit from real grass tee areas, fairway surfaces, rough, and sand towards a giant simulation screen, more than 20 times the size of a standard golf simulator. The technologically advanced play zone includes systems that modify the slope to create a variety of challenges on each TGL hole. Each hole is worth one point. If the two teams are tied at the end of regulation time, overtime is played to determine the winner.
  • The Hammer: Each team starts with three hammers, which they can use to increase the value of the hole by 1 point. The maximum value of a hole is 3 points.
  • Overtime: TGL’s overtime is similar to penalty kicks in soccer. Golfers compete head-to-head until one team achieves two shots closer to the hole than their opponents.
  • Shot Clock: Each match has a shot clock with a 40-second countdown. Players must take their shot within the allotted time, or their team will receive a one-stroke penalty.
  • Timeouts: Each team has four timeouts per match, two per session. Unused timeouts in the first session do not carry over to the second.
  • Referee: A referee is present on the course to enforce TGL rules and regulations, and another official oversees the action from a booth.
All golfers will use microphones during the matches to bring fans closer to the action. Each TGL event integrates with the PGA Tour calendar as part of the league’s partnership with the tour. Weekly matches will lead to the playoffs, culminating with a team winning the SoFi Cup.

How does the point system work in TGL?

Similar to the NHL, TGL uses a point-based system for regular season matches. For each match, teams can earn up to two points for their regular season total. That total determines their position in the SoFi Cup standings. A win in regulation time and a win in overtime are equivalent to two points, while a loss in overtime is equivalent to one point. The top four teams advance to the playoffs, which include a single-elimination semifinal round and a best-of-three championship series.

Who competes in TGL?

Six teams representing six cities will face off in the regular season competition. The Motor City Golf Club has been announced as the league’s first expansion team, with its debut scheduled for 2027.
