Sepp Straka Withdraws from BMW Championship Due to Family Matters
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Golfer Sepp Straka has decided to withdraw from the BMW Championship due to a private family matter, although he plans to participate in the Tour Championship next week.
His representative, Butler Melnyk, did not reveal details about the family situation, but requested privacy in a statement.
Straka’s absence reduces the number of participants in the BMW Championship at Caves Valley to 49 golfers. Despite this absence, Straka is not affected in his position in the FedEx Cup, where he holds the number 5 spot. Scottie Scheffler has already secured first place and the $5 million prize.
In the Tour Championship, the 30 qualified players will start from scratch in search of the FedEx Cup title and the $10 million bonus.
Straka is in sixth position in the Ryder Cup standings for Europe. His place in the top six could be affected this week by Shane Lowry or Ludvig Åberg. The top six players secure a place in the European team after the Tour Championship and the British Masters. However, Straka is likely to be selected. He is currently tenth in the world ranking.
