Sepp Straka Withdraws from BMW Championship Due to Family Matter
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Golfer Sepp Straka has made the decision to withdraw from the BMW Championship due to a private family matter. However, he is expected to participate in the Tour Championship next week.
His representative, Butler Melnyk, chose not to disclose details about the nature of the family matter, requesting respect for Straka’s privacy through a statement.
This withdrawal reduces the number of participants in the BMW Championship, to be held at Caves Valley, to 49 players. Despite his absence, Straka is not affected by this situation.
Currently, Straka holds the number 5 position in the FedEx Cup. He can no longer aim for the $5 million prize awarded to the number 1 player in the ranking, as this position has already been secured by Scottie Scheffler.
The 30 golfers who qualify for the Tour Championship will start from scratch in their attempt to win the FedEx Cup title and the $10 million bonus.
Straka is in sixth place in the Ryder Cup standings for Europe. His position in the top six could be affected this week by Shane Lowry or Ludvig Åberg.
The top six players will qualify for the European team after the Tour Championship and the British Masters. Regardless, Straka is likely to be selected. He is currently tenth in the world rankings.
