Somi Lee Shines with Outstanding Leadership at the CME Group Tour Championship

South Korean golfer Somi Lee has burst onto the scene at the CME Group Tour Championship, by changing her putting technique, achieving an outstanding performance that positions her as the leader after the first day. Lee, with an impressive round of 64 strokes, eight under par, has placed two strokes ahead of her competitors in the fight for the $4 million grand prize. The South Korean golfer decided to modify her putting grip, inspired by the technique of Lydia Ko, a member of the LPGA Hall of Fame. This decision proved to be key, as she needed only 27 putts during the round.

I just followed Lydia Ko’s putter grip because she’s a good player and I thought, “Why not follow a good player’s grip?” It worked really well.

Lee achieved an eagle on the 17th hole, driven by the choice of a 5-iron due to the warm conditions, and although she finished with a bogey on the last hole, her performance was enough to lead the competition. In second position, two strokes behind Lee, is Allisen Corpuz, former U.S. Women’s Open champion. The world number one and favorite for the LPGA Player of the Year award, Jeeno Thitikul, is in third place with a card of 67 strokes, tied with three other players. Thitikul, winner of last year’s Tour Championship, will secure the Player of the Year award based on points, unless Miyu Yamashita, from Japan, wins this tournament. Yamashita, who has secured two victories this year, including the Women’s Open, had a less remarkable day, with two bogeys and a score of 70 strokes. Nelly Korda, seeking to close out the year with a victory after having achieved seven titles the previous year, had a discreet round of 71 strokes. The tournament, which has a prize of $11 million, offers the largest cash prize in the history of women’s golf, with $4 million for the winner. The competition features the top 60 golfers of the season. Thitikul, along with Im, Nasa Hataoka and Sei-young Kim, share third place. Grace Kim and Minjee Lee, both major champions, are in the group with 68 strokes.
