Sergio García Withdraws from the Irish Open Following Ryder Cup Decision

Spanish golfer Sergio García has decided to withdraw from this week’s Irish Open. This decision comes after the disappointment of not being selected for the Ryder Cup, as he stated to GolfMagic. The European team captain, Luke Donald, did not include Garcia among the selections for the match against the United States at Bethpage Black later this month. Donald’s decision wasn’t a complete surprise, as García only had one top 10 finish in his last eight LIV Golf events in the 2025 season.

I felt like I really wanted to be part of that team, and mentally it was a little tough (playing in the Irish Open). I didn’t want to go and not be fully involved in the tournament, so I decided to take some time off and spend it with family, do some things outside of golf and recharge my batteries.

One of those things was attending the US Open tennis tournament, where García saw his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz defeat Jiri Lehecka in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. After the victory, Alcaraz revealed that he plans to play golf on Wednesday with Garcia, the 2017 Masters champion. Alcaraz joked that García “has to give me at least 10 to 15 shots”.
