Luke Donald Defines the European Team for the 2025 Ryder Cup

Captain Luke Donald has revealed the six selections for his Ryder Cup team, as Europe seeks its first away win since 2012. With stellar figures like Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood already secured, Donald’s picks complete what promises to be one of the strongest European teams in recent times. Eleven members of the team that competed in Rome last year, where Europe triumphed with a score of 16½-11½, are returning. However, no visiting team has achieved victory since the “Miracle at Medinah” 13 years ago. The Europeans will face the United States team at Bethpage Black, Farmingdale, New York, from September 26 to 28. The selections for the American team are now known, with captain Keegan Bradley opting not to include himself.

A Leadership with History

Donald joins a select group of captains who have led Europe on multiple occasions. Between 1979 and 1995, there were only three different captains: John Jacobs, Tony Jacklin, and Bernard Gallacher. Donald will seek to emulate Jacklin, who achieved two victories in this period. Donald’s task at Bethpage is unusual and could make him a legend.

“Great opportunities don’t often arise in life and I firmly believe that when they do, you have to seize them with both hands. This is one of those moments,” Donald declared.

Classified and Selected Players

Rory McIlroy

The Northern Irishman, with seven Ryder Cup appearances, was the first player to qualify for the European team. His eighth appearance comes after a memorable season, including his victory at the 2025 Masters.

Robert McIntyre

The Scot, with a single participation in 2023, has had an outstanding season with two second places and six top-10 finishes. Donald highlights his valuable experience.

Tommy Fleetwood

Fleetwood, with three participations, achieved his first victory on the PGA Tour after numerous attempts. His consistency in the Ryder Cup is notable, with seven match wins.

Justin Rose

At 45 years old, Rose brings experience and talent to the team, with an outstanding season including a victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. His current form makes him a valuable asset.

Rasmus Højgaard

Højgaard will make his Ryder Cup debut after securing the last qualifying spot. At 24 years old, he will seek a better performance than his brother, Nicolai, in his 2023 debut.

Tyrrell Hatton

Hatton, the only LIV player to qualify directly, will participate in his fourth Ryder Cup. Despite not earning LIV points for his qualification, his performance in 2023 was crucial for the team.

Captain’s Elections

Shane Lowry

Lowry, a close friend of McIlroy, brings experience and consistency to the team, with two second places this year. Donald chose him as his first pick.

Jon Rahm

Despite his position in the European ranking, Rahm was a safe choice. With two LIV Golf titles in 2025, his presence is vital. Rahm is a key player in the Ryder Cup, with 7.5 points in three participations.

Sepp Straka

Straka, with two PGA Tour victories, has had an inconsistent performance since May. However, his development since 2023 has been notable for Donald.

Viktor Hovland

Hovland has had a variable season, with a win at the Valspar. His performance in the majors and his Ryder Cup record make him valuable.

Ludvig Aberg

Aberg, the rising star of Marco Simone, has shown great potential. With victories and outstanding performances, he will seek to improve his record in this edition.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Fitzpatrick, with six top-10 finishes in 11 tournaments, secures his fourth Ryder Cup appearance. He will seek to improve his record in the competition.
