Ricky Castillo Conquers the Puerto Rico Open with an Epic Comeback

In an exciting day in Río Grande, Puerto Rico, Ricky Castillo won the Puerto Rico Open, achieving his first title on the PGA Tour. Castillo starred in an impressive comeback, sealing his triumph with a solid performance in the final round. The young golfer, Blades Brown, 18 years old, was leading the competition until an unfortunate hole changed the course of the tournament. Castillo, taking advantage of the situation, chained crucial birdies that catapulted him to victory. Castillo, after sinking a 12-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole, and then, with an excellent approach on the 14th hole, put himself in a privileged position. His impeccable performance secured him a place in his first major championship as a professional.

The victory earns him a spot in the PGA Championship and he already had his participation in The Players Championship secured.

“It’s truly incredible to be able to express in words winning my first event,” Castillo stated. “I wanted to be at Bay Hill and decided to come play here and ended up winning, so everything works out in the end. Yes, a surreal week.”

Ricky CastilloCastillo finished with a total of 17 under par, surpassing by one stroke Chandler Blanchet, who closed with a birdie on the last hole. Blades Brown, who turned professional last year, finished in third place, achieving his first top 10 on the PGA Tour. A single hole, the 13th, cost him dearly, similar to what happened at The American Express, when a mistake took him away from the competition. John Daly II, son of champion John Daly, had a promising start, but a series of bogeys relegated him in the standings. Despite this, Daly remained optimistic.

“I learned that you have to play four consistent rounds and that’s not easy here,” Daly said. “But I’m very happy, not angry at all. It was a great day, a great week.”
