Patrick Reed: “Captain America” at the Crossroads of the Ryder Cup

Despite his nickname, “Captain America”, Patrick Reed acknowledges the difficulty of being selected for the U.S. Ryder Cup team, currently competing on the LIV Golf circuit.

“I think it all comes down to next week at The Open,” Reed declared on Thursday ahead of the LIV Golf Andalucia event at Real Club Valderrama in Sotogrande, Spain.

Reed, 34, is ranked number 36 in the U.S. Ryder Cup points standings, which only considers the performances of LIV golfers in the majors. The former Masters champion achieved a third-place finish at Augusta this year and a T23 at the US Open, but did not make the cut at the PGA Championship. In his three previous Ryder Cup appearances (2016, 2018, and 2021), Reed displayed an impressive record of 7-3-2.

“It’s hard to answer,” Reed commented when asked about his chances of being selected for U.S. captain Keegan Bradley’s 12-player team for the September showdown at Bethpage Black, New York.

“…Really, in the coming weeks, I must play solid golf, go out and compete on Sundays, have the opportunity to win golf tournaments, and if I do that, I hope Keegan picks me. But at the end of the day, because we only get points in the majors for the Ryder Cup, it’s an uphill battle.” “The good thing is that I feel like I’m in a good moment, as long as I go out and play well in the final major.” Reed comes from obtaining his first LIV Golf title in Dallas last month. The 4Aces GC member is fourth in the individual season standings. Reed’s best result at The Open Championship was a tenth place in 2019. This year’s final major begins next Thursday at Royal Portrush, in Northern Ireland.
