Jon Rahm and Shane Lowry: Bitter Return After the Ryder Cup
Madrid – The return to competition of Jon Rahm and Shane Lowry after their participation in the Ryder Cup was not as expected. Rahm even had a tense moment with a marshal during the Spanish Open. After a shot that left him in the rough on the 8th hole, Rahm expressed his frustration with a comment and an expletive. The marshal tried to encourage him, but Rahm responded firmly: “Don’t tell me it’s okay, please. Thank you.”Although he managed a par on that hole, Rahm closed the day with a 72 (+1). Despite an eagle on the 14th hole, his round included only one birdie and four bogeys. Rahm shared a group with Lowry, who sealed the European victory in the Ryder Cup. Rahm commented that the Ryder Cup was the most mentally tough week of his career. Lowry, for his part, signed a card of 75 (+4), with six bogeys and two birdies. The provisional leaders of the tournament are Marco Penge and Frederic Lacroix, both with a 66 (-5). Rahm seeks his fourth title at the Spanish Open, which would make him the most successful golfer in the tournament since the creation of the European circuit in 1972, surpassing Seve Ballesteros. It is Rahm’s seventh participation in Madrid, with victories in 2018, 2019 and 2022. Last year he was runner-up. The tournament offers for the first time an automatic place for next year’s Masters and Open Championship to the winner. The world’s number 1 tennis player, Carlos Alcaraz, was present in the initial round. Please don’t tell me it’s okay. Thank you.
