Jon Rahm Defends Points Title in LIV Golf, But Loses to Sebastián Muñoz in Playoff
Spanish golfer Jon Rahm managed to defend his season points title in LIV Golf on Sunday, although without achieving a victory in an event throughout the year. He finished with an impressive round of 60 strokes, 11 under par, but succumbed to Sebastián Muñoz in an exciting playoff at the Indianapolis event.
Muñoz, for his part, achieved victory two days after becoming the first player to achieve a card of 59 strokes with a double bogey. The Colombian player, with Rahm practicing on the practice course, got birdies on the last two holes in regulation, signing a card of 65 strokes to tie with Rahm at 22 under par at The Club at Chatham Hills.
The previous week, Rahm also lost on the first playoff hole, outside of Chicago, to Dean Burmester in a three-way playoff that included Josele Ballester. On Sunday, Muñoz beat the Spanish star with a birdie on the 18th hole, a par 4, in the playoff.
Rahm snatched the season points title from Joaquin Niemann, who achieved five victories this season. Niemann signed a card of 66 strokes to tie for fourth place with 17 under par, his first top 10 of the year in which he did not achieve victory.
Muñoz led the Torque GC team to the team championship. Torque finished with 64 under par, breaking the LIV record, which was 53 under par.
Ian Poulter birdied four of his last five holes, finishing with a score of 67 strokes to tie for 17th place and avoid relegation from the circuit. His Majesticks teammate, Henrik Stenson, was relegated after missing a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole, which would have kept him on the circuit and left Poulter out.
