David Puig Crowned Australian PGA Champion

The Spanish golfer David Puig has written his name in golf history by winning the Australian PGA Championship, joining the legend Seve Ballesteros as the only Spaniards to achieve this feat. Puig, with an impeccable performance, prevailed on a challenging course at the Royal Queensland GC, surpassing a group of high-level competitors. The young LIV Golf talent showcased his skill from the start, with consecutive birdies on holes two, three, and four, securing a considerable lead. He finished Sunday with an impressive round of five under par, accumulating a total of 18 under par, two strokes ahead of China’s Wenyi Ding. The final round began with a large number of players fighting for the top, but it was Puig who took the lead, maintaining calm and precision in each stroke.

“Being alongside Seve is something very special,” Puig commented, recalling Ballesteros’ influence on Spanish golf.

Puig joins the select list of international tournament winners, being the ninth in almost 100 years and the second since 1998. The Spaniard followed in Ballesteros’ footsteps, who won the championship in 1981. Puig, who left university to join the LIV Tour in 2022, has participated in the DP World Tour and in the majors in recent years. Recently, he committed to being a full-time member of the European circuit in 2026, balancing his schedule and accepting any sanctions that may arise. Other prominent players, such as Marc Leishman and Min Woo Lee, also competed for the title, but Puig maintained his lead, demonstrating his composure and skill in crucial moments. Adam Scott finished in seventh place, while Nick Voke and Daniel Hillier also had notable performances. Leishman, despite his efforts, failed to obtain a major title in Australia.
