Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter lead the Rocket Classic with spectacular rounds

In a historic day at the Detroit Golf Club, Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter tied the Rocket Classic record by finishing the first round with impressive scorecards of 62 strokes, ten under par.

The field, known for being one of the most accessible on the PGA Tour since 2019, witnessed how these two golfers, recently promoted from the Korn Ferry Tour, made the most of the favorable conditions.

Potgieter, the 20-year-old South African who grew up in Australia, began his round on the 10th hole and set a new tournament record with an exceptional 29 on the first nine holes. He added three more birdies on his second round, sealing his performance with a 12-foot putt on the last hole.

Both Roy, 35 years old, and Potgieter, shone with a bogey-free round, including an eagle and eight birdies each.

Despite their notable performances, both golfers are aware that they cannot let their guard down on a course so conducive to low scores, especially with the recent rains that have made the greens even more receptive.

Min Woo Lee, Max Greyserman, and Mark Hubbard were one stroke behind the leaders, matching the previous tournament record with a score of 63. Andrew Putnam signed a 64, while Zach Johnson, a two-time major champion, was one stroke away.

Competition is intense, with the participation of nine of the world’s top 50 players, led by Collin Morikawa, number 5 in the ranking, who started with a 69. Keegan Bradley, Ryder Cup captain and winner of the Travelers Championship last week, with the number 7 position in the world, recorded a 68.
