Piot Makes History: First ex-LIV Golf Player with PGA Tour Invitation

Golfer James Piot, a former LIV Golf competitor, will make a milestone on the PGA Tour this week at the Rocket Classic. Piot, who joined the event on Monday at the Detroit Golf Club in Michigan, becomes one of the first players from LIV to return to the PGA Tour, and the first to receive a sponsor exemption.

Piot, 26 years old and from Farmington Hills, Mich., and 2021 U.S. Amateur champion, last competed on the PGA Tour in 2022, missing the cut at the Masters and the US Open. He hasn’t played a LIV event since 2023, making him eligible for the Detroit event. PGA Tour rules stipulate a one-year ban for players who compete in unauthorized events.

Piot is not the first LIV player to return to the PGA Tour. Laurie Canter, from England, has competed in five events so far in 2025.

That this actually happens is the coolest thing in the world. It’s incredible. Just the fact that I can finally play in the Rocket Classic is a dream come true. Ever since the event was created on the calendar, I wanted to be a part of it.

Piot was part of the first wave of players who signed with the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Golf circuit during the summer of 2022, agreeing to a two-year contract with a guarantee of approximately $6 million. Registered only one top 10 with a T6 in Bangkok in October 2022.
