PGA President Apologizes for Controversial Ryder Cup Comments
The president of the PGA of America, Don Rea Jr., has issued a formal apology to the more than 30,000 golf professionals he represents. The apology comes after his initial comments about the behavior of the fans at the Ryder Cup generated controversy. The event, which culminated in Europe’s 15-13 victory, was marked by the inappropriate behavior of some spectators.Rea admitted that his comments in the media during the event did not represent the association in the best way and personally apologized to Rory McIlroy and his wife, as well as all PGA members. The president also addressed the controversy generated by the fans’ behavior, which included offensive chants and vulgar language directed at the European players. The incidents included offensive chants directed at Rory McIlroy and other European players. The situation reached such a point that McIlroy responded to a spectator, and McIlroy’s wife was subjected to abuse. PGA CEO Derek Sprague also publicly apologized for the spectators’ behavior, acknowledging that boundaries were crossed and that he planned to apologize personally to McIlroy and his wife. Rea was also criticized for his participation in the trophy presentation ceremony on Sunday. The PGA of America had announced in 2013 that the Ryder Cup would be held at Bethpage Black, a public golf course with a reputation for direct comments towards players. This incident recalls the departure of Ted Bishop, former PGA president, in 2014, following a social media comment about Ian Poulter.“I must start by assuming our responsibility. Although the competition was intense, especially with the comeback of the U.S. team on Sunday afternoon, the behavior of some fans clearly crossed the line,” reads Rea’s letter to PGA of America members. “It was disrespectful, inappropriate, and does not represent who we are as the PGA of America or as PGA of America golf professionals. We unequivocally condemn that behavior.”
