Marco Penge Wins the Spanish Open and Secures His Place in the Masters and the British Open

In an exciting golf day, Marco Penge, from England, won the Spanish Open after defeating his compatriot Daniel Brown in a playoff. This triumph grants him a place in the prestigious Masters and the British Open next year. Penge, despite having surrendered a four-stroke lead, showed his mettle by achieving a birdie on the first playoff hole, thus securing his third European Tour title so far this year.

“Dan and Joel Girrbach played very well today. They were sinking putts, and I just couldn’t get it in the hole. I felt like I was really up against it. But I felt like I handled myself very well, and in fact I think from tee to green, I feel like I played very solid. Never mind the putts; I think I used them all yesterday, but obviously sinking that one there was worth the wait”, commented Penge.

This edition of the national tournament was special, as for the first time the winner obtained a direct place for the Masters and The Open.

“It’s crazy,” Penge said about the possibility of playing in the Masters. “It’s a golf course I’ve always wanted to play, because I feel like my game suits it very well.”

Penge, who finished with a round of 72 strokes (+1) on Sunday, tied with Brown in the tournament with a total of 15 under par. Brown, celebrating his 31st birthday on Saturday, rallied from five strokes behind, achieving a 67 (-4) in the final round. Despite dealing with a right shoulder injury that required treatment, he forced the playoff with a birdie on the last hole. The 27-year-old golfer, Penge, was also crowned champion at the Danish Golf Championship and the Hainan Classic. Joel Girrbach, with a card of 69 strokes, started the day four strokes behind the leader and finished in third place with 14 under par. Jon Rahm, the local favorite, who was looking for his fourth title at the Spanish Open, was not in the fight at the start of the final round, but closed with a 65 (-6), finishing in a tie for ninth place. Shane Lowry, like Rahm, returned to competition after his participation in the Ryder Cup, but failed to make the cut at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.
