Patrick Reed Conquers the Qatar Masters and Secures His Return to the PGA Tour

Patrick Reed capped off an extraordinary month in the Middle East by winning the Qatar Masters on Sunday, marking his second European Tour victory in three weeks. This triumph practically assures the former Masters champion a full PGA Tour card for 2027. Reed closed with a round of 70 strokes, two under par, overcoming the initial threat from Jacob Skov Olesen and the late surge from Calum Hill, achieving a two-stroke victory at the Doha Golf Club. In the last three weeks, Reed has achieved notable results: victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, a second place in a playoff in Bahrain and now the triumph in Qatar, finishing with a total of 16 under par, 272 strokes. No player has achieved a lower score in 72 consecutive holes in three European Tour events. This performance will allow him to climb into the top 20 of the world ranking for the first time since 2021.

This streak I’ve had, two wins and a second place, is incredible. We couldn’t ask for anything more than what we’ve done. It’s special, especially getting two wins at the start of the season, and I hope there’s much more to come.

The 35-year-old American golfer returns home with a very different course than he initially anticipated. Reed traveled to Dubai with the intention of preparing for his fifth season in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf. However, his victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, against strong competition, revealed that he had not renewed his contract with LIV. In the following days, Reed chose to leave LIV Golf with the aim of returning to the PGA Tour. He plans to play a full European Tour schedule to try to obtain a full PGA Tour card, placing among the top 10 in the Race to Dubai who are not yet exempt. The following two weeks in Bahrain and Qatar were decisive. Reed currently leads the Race to Dubai with 2,259 points, already surpassing the number of points of the player who obtained the last PGA Tour card last season. He still has the four majors and four Rolex Series events to play, and now Reed is aiming for more than a full card in America next year.

It has always been a dream of mine to be an American to win the Race to Dubai, and we have had a fast start.

Collin Morikawa, in 2021, is the only American who has finished in the number 1 position on the European Tour. The European Tour will take a break next week before starting a three-week series in Africa. It has not yet been confirmed when Reed will compete again. His position in the world ranking ensures him a place in the four majors, although the European Tour schedule is not ideal for travel leading up to the US majors.
