New York Prepares for Major Golf Events Through 2035

Just one week before the start of the Ryder Cup in New York, the PGA of America has confirmed the venue for three major championships in the state through the year 2035. The news marks a significant milestone for golf in the region. The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship will be held at the Black Course at Bethpage Black in 2028. Subsequently, the PGA Championship will return to Bethpage Black in 2033, for the second time. Additionally, the PGA of America announced that the PGA Championship will return to Oak Hill, near Rochester, in 2035, marking the fifth time this course will host the tournament. The Ryder Cup will kick off on September 26 at Bethpage Black, a highly prestigious public course on Long Island. Bethpage Black previously hosted the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009. The Women’s PGA Championship, jointly organized by the PGA of America and the LPGA Tour since 2015, has undergone a notable transformation. This event replaced a regular LPGA event in the Rochester area, but had not returned to New York under this structure since 2015 in Westchester.

“Bringing the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship to Bethpage Black is a significant milestone and reflects our commitment to hosting this event at premier courses in important markets,” stated Don Rea Jr., President of the PGA of America.

Since the collaboration of the PGA of America with the LPGA, the Women’s PGA has visited eight courses that previously hosted majors, including Baltusrol in New Jersey, Olympia Fields south of Chicago, Hazeltine in Minnesota, and Congressional near the capital.

“Places matter. They elevate our athletes and amplify the moments that define our game,” said Craig Kessler, LPGA commissioner.

The PGA Championship moved from August to May starting in 2019, which has helped avoid the extreme weather conditions experienced at Bethpage Black in 2019 and Oak Hill in 2023, although there was a delay due to frost in the first round at Oak Hill. The U.S. Open will also be held in New York next year, at Shinnecock Hills, and the Western Golf Association will present the BMW Championship, a FedEx Cup playoffs event on the PGA Tour, at Liberty National, in New Jersey, in 2027. The Ryder Cup, which expects large crowds at Bethpage Black, was last held in New York at Oak Hill in 1995. Europe won that year, kicking off a period in which it has conquered the Ryder Cup in 10 of the last 14 editions.
