Mackenzie Hughes Leads the Procore Championship

Canadian golfer Mackenzie Hughes showcased his skill with an impressive round of 9 under par, signing a scorecard of 63 strokes to lead the Procore Championship. Meanwhile, all eyes were on the American Ryder Cup team, with mixed results. Ben Griffin, a Ryder Cup rookie, surprised with five birdies on the back nine, shooting a 64, just one stroke behind Hughes, matching Matt McCarty’s score. Russell Henley finished with 65 strokes, sharing a position with Lanto Griffin. Scottie Scheffler, who hadn’t finished outside the top eight since March, saw his streak interrupted by recording a 70. This ended a sequence of 21 consecutive rounds under 70 strokes. Ten Ryder Cup players are competing in this tournament, looking to hone their game before the competition at Bethpage Black. Henley signed a card of 65 strokes and J.J. Spaun, US Open champion, achieved a 67. Scheffler showed his frustration on the field, visibly annoyed by a shot that didn’t favor him. Hughes, for his part, is competing with other goals. Despite not being in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup, a good performance in the tournament could secure him a place at Pebble Beach and Riviera. The Canadian achieved nine birdies in 13 holes, dreaming of a 59, although two bogeys stopped that goal. Despite this, he was satisfied with his 63.

“The goal is to get into that top 60 and start the year well,” commented Hughes, who is currently in 65th place. “I would like to play some tournaments and rest in the fall. That’s the plan right now. We’ll see what happens.”

Sam Burns finished with 71 strokes, while other Ryder Cup players, such as Justin Thomas, Cameron Young, Patrick Cantlay, Harris English, and Collin Morikawa, recorded 72 strokes.
