The excitement of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs is about to begin, with the FedEx St. Jude Championship as the first event of the series.
However, the world’s number 2, Rory McIlroy, will not participate in this crucial stage of the tournament.
The recently published participant list for the St. Jude does not include the current Masters champion.
To qualify for the event, players must be among the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings after this week’s Wyndham Championship. McIlroy’s absence reduces the field to 69 golfers in Memphis, Tennessee, for next week.
Last year, McIlroy had a discreet performance at the St. Jude, finishing in the penultimate place. This is an event he has yet to win.
“I finished practically last this year and only dropped one place in the playoff standings,” McIlroy stated.
McIlroy currently holds the second position in the FedEx Cup standings, just behind Scottie Scheffler, which means he doesn’t need to play the St. Jude to secure a spot among the top 50 advancing to the BMW Championship the following week.
The playoffs will culminate with the Tour Championship, where the top 30 players in the FedEx standings will compete for the title.
McIlroy’s last appearance in a tournament was two weeks ago, where he achieved a tie for seventh place in the Open Championship.
