The excitement of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs is just around the corner, starting next week with the FedEx St. Jude Championship. However, a prominent figure will not be present: world number 2, Rory McIlroy. The defending Masters champion is not on the list of participants for the St. Jude, as announced by the PGA Tour on Friday. The tournament will qualify the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings after this week’s Wyndham Championship. McIlroy’s absence reduces the field in Memphis, Tennessee, to 69 competitors.Last year, McIlroy had a poor performance at the St. Jude, finishing in second-to-last place. This is an event he has yet to win.
McIlroy is currently second in the FedEx Cup standings, only surpassed by Scottie Scheffler. This ensures his participation in the BMW Championship, to which the top 50 players qualify. The playoffs will culminate with the Tour Championship, where the top 30 of the FedEx standings will compete. The last time McIlroy competed was two weeks ago, where he achieved a tie for seventh place at the Open Championship.I practically finished in last place this year and only dropped one spot in the playoff standings.
