Rory McIlroy: The Fracture in Golf Persists

Professional golf faces an uncertain future, according to statements by renowned golfer Rory McIlroy. Internal divisions, exacerbated by the “irrational” investment of the LIV series, have created a gap difficult to overcome. Initially, the merger proposal between the conflicting parties was expected to heal the dispute that arose in 2021, when the Saudi LIV league attracted several stars with millionaire contracts. However, after more than two and a half years, the situation has not moved towards a solution.

We see other sports that have been fractured for a long time, like boxing. For golf in general, it would be better if there was unification.

McIlroy, in an interview at CNBC’s CEO Council Forum, expressed his skepticism about the possibility of an early reconciliation. The golfer pointed out the difficulty of negotiating with those who have acted “irrationally” in terms of investment and capital expenditure.

The golfer pointed out that, after four or five years, there has still been no return on investment, and that more expenses will be needed to maintain the current situation. Many player contracts are expiring, which could lead to demands for even higher salaries. In this context, McIlroy feels more comfortable on the PGA Tour, although he acknowledges the uncertainty of the future. Bryson DeChambeau, LIV golfer, agrees that the parties are distanced.

I wish something important would happen, but I don’t think it will happen in the immediate future. We are too distanced on many things. It will take time, but I think golf will grow internationally.
