ORLANDO, Fla. – Rory McIlroy expressed his regret over Jon Rahm’s situation, the only LIV Golf player who has not accepted the terms of the DP World Tour agreement to eliminate future sanctions. McIlroy downplayed concerns about Rahm’s possible absence from the Ryder Cup team.
The uncertainty about Rahm’s participation in the tournament arose this week, after he rejected the European circuit’s offer: to pay the previous fines for participating in LIV Golf events without authorization, withdraw any appeal, and play two additional tournaments to the four required to be a member of the DP World Tour. Rahm, in statements from LIV Golf Hong Kong, accused the DP World Tour of “extorting players” by forcing them to play two extra tournaments. The golfer stated that he would have accepted the agreement if it only involved paying fines, withdrawing appeals, and participating in the minimum four events. The Ryder Cup is bigger than any individual.

Tyrrell Hatton and seven other European golfers competing in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf accepted the conditions. The DP World Tour would collaborate in the selection of the additional tournaments, seeking to strengthen the calendar. In my opinion, it’s a very generous agreement. McIlroy added that the deal was “much more flexible” than the PGA Tour’s demands on Brooks Koepka for his return. Koepka had to donate $5 million to charities, was unable to access PGA Tour stock for five years, and did not receive FedEx Cup bonuses this year. In addition, he could not participate in the most important $20 million events unless he qualified.I simply don’t like the situation. I think we should be able to play freely wherever we want and have the option to choose where to play, without being told what to do.

According to McIlroy, these rules involve the payment of fines if players do not obtain authorization to participate in LIV Golf events when the DP World Tour organizes a tournament that same week. The European agreement would end the fines for LIV Golf players. The European circuit can only do so much to please these players. If you want to play in the Ryder Cup, you must be a member of the DP World Tour… You have to abide by the rules and regulations.

Regarding the DP World Tour’s involvement in choosing additional tournaments, McIlroy joked about Rahm, saying: “I’m sure Jon won’t want to go to South Africa next week” for a LIV event. LIV players must participate in each event on the schedule instead of competing in other tournaments. For example, Graeme McDowell would not have been excused to play the Irish Open when LIV Golf competed in Oregon in 2022.There’s a reason why eight of the nine players accepted that agreement, right? I think it’s a very good agreement. Yes, obviously Jon doesn’t think so, and he has every right to think that way, but I don’t see what else the European Tour can do to accommodate these players and maintain their membership.
McIlroy
McIlroy spoke at the Arnold Palmer Invitational on the same day that Luke Donald was chosen as the European Ryder Cup captain for the third consecutive time. Rahm has been part of every Ryder Cup team since his debut in 2018.He signed a contract with LIV and plays 14 events and the whole thing. But the DP World Tour has every right to protect itself as a member organization and as a business. And if you ask any DP World Tour member about the deal they’ve made with the LIV guys, I think they’d all say it was pretty generous.
McIlroy
It’s great to see the clarity among the other players who have signed the conditional waivers and understand that they are available [for the Ryder Cup]. Obviously, I haven’t spoken to Jon, so I don’t want to comment on that yet. I know he has his own reasons. But I hope to catch up with him and I really hope he’s available.
Donald
Rahm’s future with Europe, unless he changes his mind, depends on a UK arbitration panel that is hearing his appeals. The panel ruled in favor of the DP World Tour in 2023, determining that it was entitled to impose fines as a member organization. If the panel rules in favor of the circuit in Rahm’s case, his membership, and his eligibility for the Ryder Cup, would be at risk.
I think we should all be grateful to have a platform like the Ryder Cup where we can play and showcase our skills and be part of something that is obviously much bigger than ourselves. So, at the end of the day, it’s about the team, and no player is bigger than the team.
