Rory McIlroy: A Champion with 1,100 Flags and a Wish Fulfilled
Following his victory at the Masters, Rory McIlroy didn’t leave Augusta National without one last purchase from the gift shop. The golfer acquired the remaining 1,100 flags that were for sale. The golfer commented that it has been a lot of work to sign all those flags, but that he will not tire of doing it. He stated that he waited 17 years to sign that flag, and that he will never complain about it. Tradition dictates that only the Masters champion can sign their name within the outline of the United States, part of the famous tournament logo. A little over four months have passed since McIlroy culminated his 17-year quest by winning the green jacket, making a birdie on the first playoff hole and surpassing Justin Rose to complete his career Grand Slam. Although he hasn’t won since then, being the Masters champion never gets old. McIlroy is already planning some visits to Augusta National, a privilege reserved for the champion, including one with his father. What surprised him the most was the possession of the green jacket for a year. McIlroy confessed that he used it all night until he went to bed at 3:30 a.m., and upon waking up, he experienced the sensations that many others have lived. He saw the jacket on a chair, reminding him that it was not all a dream. She briefly used it at the dinner of the Association of Golf Writers during the British Open. Otherwise, the occasions have been few.“We’ve taken the 1,100,” McIlroy declared before the Tour Championship, the final of a PGA Tour season that has been memorable for him, all thanks to a Sunday in April.

McIlroy has planned trips with friends and some members of Augusta National with whom he has befriended over the years. He will have to wear his green jacket at the club, something he surely won’t mind.“I’m reluctant to use it. It’s not that I use it much. I have it hanging in my closet in a place where I can see it every day. I always thought that if I had one, if I won the Masters one day, I would never take it off, and it hasn’t been like that. I haven’t used it as much as I thought,” McIlroy commented.

“I’ve always said that some of my favorite moments at Augusta were when it wasn’t the Masters,” he said, referring to the times he went before the Masters for practice rounds. “But it will be lovely next time to go there and go up to the champions’ locker room and put on my green jacket and feel like I belong.”
