Matt Fitzpatrick Reveals Reasons Why His Parents Won’t Attend the Ryder Cup

Golfer Matt Fitzpatrick has confirmed that his parents will not be traveling to see him compete in the Ryder Cup in New York, due in part to the behavior of the public. The European team, and Fitzpatrick, are expected to receive a hostile reception from the local fans at the start of the tournament against the United States at Bethpage Black on Friday. The Yorkshire player, who is participating in his fourth Ryder Cup, was already booed at the 2021 event at Whistling Straits. As a result, his parents have decided not to attend on this occasion, although his participation in the next Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, in which his other son Alex also participates, also influenced their decision.

They didn’t have a good experience at Whistling Straits, that’s not a lie or anything like that. But also, both parents will play next week at the Dunhill. They really didn’t want to ruin that experience either, because obviously it’s special to have that. So it’s a combination. It’s a lot of travel, obviously it’s a busy week. It’s a tiring week. And then, obviously, they want to have a good week too.

Despite being booed during practice, Fitzpatrick is determined not to be affected by the insults.

I’m from Sheffield, so that’s probably a good start. The fans are the ones who make this event. They’re the ones who make this event so fun, so special, and obviously it’s a great opportunity for us to come and try to play our best golf in front of them.

Fitzpatrick, 31, rose to global prominence after winning the US Open in 2022, but his Ryder Cup record is not favorable, having only earned one point in eight appearances.

It’s frustrating, but all I can do is keep qualifying for the teams and keep giving myself the opportunity to improve the record.
