Matt Kuchar and the Future on the PGA Tour: A Detailed Analysis
Veteran golfer Matt Kuchar has concluded his nineteenth consecutive season on the PGA Tour, finishing in the 118th position in the FedEx Cup standings. This position, which in previous years would have secured his full card, now raises questions due to the tour’s new policy that reduces the cut to the top 100, instead of the traditional 125. Kuchar’s situation is complicated when considering the current landscape of the PGA Tour, which has evolved significantly since his entry in 2002. With eight featured events, four majors, The Players Championship, and three FedEx Cup playoff events, Kuchar does not meet the requirements to participate in any of them in 2026.The uncertainty lies in whether his conditional status, being in 118th place in the FedEx Cup, will allow him to compete in a similar number of tournaments compared to using a career earnings exemption. The PGA Tour officials estimate that players ranked between 101st and 110th in the FedEx Cup will maintain that position throughout the year, and will be able to participate in approximately 16 of the 19 tournaments, in addition to all FedEx Cup Fall events, except the one in Japan. Kuchar, located eight positions below that group, runs the risk of descending if he doesn’t show a good performance from the start of the season. Despite this, Kuchar has time to evaluate his options, including the use of his two exemptions. His outstanding career, with earnings of more than $61 million, places him at number 15 on the career earnings list. This allows him to consider the possibility of waiting one more year to use the exemption for the top 25. Kuchar will have to make a decision in the next month, before the Sony Open in Hawaii. During the current season, Kuchar achieved a single top 10, a tie for fifth place at the John Deere Classic, but only missed two cuts in 18 participations.I don’t know how many tournaments I’ll be able to play. I’m not sure if using an exemption will guarantee me more participations. It’s a complicated situation, as it doesn’t ensure you entry into the highest category events.
Matt Kuchar
It’s not the 2025 I was expecting. It was a frustrating year. Although I only missed two cuts, I didn’t manage to string together weeks where I played well and also performed well with the putter.
