AKRON, Ohio – Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark and Ricardo Gonzalez of Argentina lead the Kaulig Companies Championship, the third major of the year on the PGA Tour Champions, after the first round.
Both golfers signed scorecards of 67 strokes, three under par, at the Firestone South course.
Gonzalez, with an opening of eight pairs, a bogey on the 18th hole and five birdies on the front, recovered from a bogey.
Stewart Cink, who was close to victory at Firestone in 2006, was on the verge of leading, but two bogeys in the last three holes relegated him to a 68.
Retief Goosen and Steven Alker also shot a 68.
Ángel Cabrera, winner of two previous majors, started with a 71.
The tournament champion secures a spot in The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
Firestone South, with a history of hosting important events, presents a challenge for players before the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado.
