Keegan Bradley Decides Not to Participate as a Player in the Ryder Cup

Keegan Bradley has made a momentous decision for the American Ryder Cup team: he will not participate as a player, ruling out the possibility of being the first player-captain in 62 years. Bradley announced his decision, revealing that he had already decided “a while ago that he wouldn’t play.” Furthermore, he confirmed the list of players selected to represent the United States in the event. The players chosen by Bradley for the Ryder Cup, which will be held next month at Bethpage Black, include:
  • Justin Thomas
  • Collin Morikawa
  • Ben Griffin
  • Cameron Young
  • Patrick Cantlay
  • Sam Burns
Bradley, who had an outstanding season and ranked 11th in the Ryder Cup standings, explained that, although he considered the option of playing, “I am 100% sure that this is the right decision”.

“I grew up wanting to play Ryder Cups… It broke my heart not to play. It really did because you work to be a part of these teams, but in the end, I was chosen to do a job. I was chosen to be the captain of this team, and my ultimate goal to start all this was to be the best captain I could be, and that’s how I felt I could do it.”

Bradley’s decision not to play also comes after U.S. captain Zach Johnson overlooked him in 2023, opting to select Burns, Rickie Fowler, and Thomas. Already qualified for the U.S. team, after finishing in the top six in the U.S. standings, are: Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, Harris English, and Bryson DeChambeau. Griffin and Young are two of the four American rookies on the Ryder Cup team, along with Spaun and Henley. Young, who grew up in New York, is especially excited to play at Bethpage Black, where he set a course record in a state amateur event. Griffin, for his part, has had a notable season, returning to professional golf after leaving the sport in 2021. His return to the PGA Tour is an inspiring story. The European captain, Luke Donald, will announce his six picks on Monday.
